Vehicle Eligibility for Import

New Caledonia is unique in that it imposes no restrictions on the age of used vehicles being imported. This gives buyers a wide range of options when selecting a vehicle. However, only right-hand drive vehicles are allowed, as per local driving rules.

Shipping Details

  • Port of Arrival: Noumea
  • Shipping Method: Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) is the most common and cost-effective method for vehicle transportation.
  • Estimated Shipping Time: It typically takes between 34 to 46 days for vehicles to reach New Caledonia.
  • Shipping Frequency: Vessels generally depart on a monthly basis.

Taxes and Fees

Understanding the taxation system is essential when importing vehicles into New Caledonia. Here are the main points to consider:

  • For Personal Use: If the vehicle is purchased but not registered in the name of the importer, taxes are calculated based on the transaction value, along with transport and insurance costs.
  • For Commercial Vehicles from EU Countries: These vehicles attract a 21% tax rate.
  • For Commercial Vehicles from Non-EU Countries: Vehicles from outside the EU face a 30% tax rate.

Additional Tax Considerations

The value of the imported vehicle is often assessed using the Argus New Caledonia value, which is valid for one year and subject to a 15% flat rate reduction. The tax calculation also depends on the vehicle’s country of origin. If the vehicle isn’t listed under Argus New Caledonia, a 10% rate reduction applies for each additional year, up to a maximum of 80% off the last rated value. Importantly, tax calculations cannot fall below the total cost of transportation and insurance.

Required Documentation

Importing a vehicle from Japan to New Caledonia involves gathering several important documents, including:

  • Commercial Invoice: This document shows the details of the vehicle purchase.
  • Bill of Lading: This serves as proof of shipment.
  • Export Certificate: Confirms the legal exportation of the vehicle from Japan.
  • Additional specific documents may be required by New Caledonian customs based on the vehicle's origin and use.
