Shipping Methods for Used Cars to Fiji

When importing a used vehicle to Fiji, there are two shipping options:

  • Roll-on Roll-off (RoRo) Shipping: This is the most economical and popular method. The vehicle is simply driven onto the ship and off at the destination port.
  • Container Shipping: Though more expensive, this option offers additional security for your vehicle, as it is shipped in a sealed container.

Your vehicle will arrive at Suva Port, Fiji’s main destination for imported cars.

Age Restrictions for Imported Vehicles

Fiji imposes strict age regulations on imported vehicles. To ensure compliance:

  • Cars and passenger vehicles: Must be less than 5 years old from the date of manufacture.
  • Special Purpose vehicles: Designed for non-transport functions (including LPG, CNG, or solar-powered road tractors) should be less than 8 years old.

Make sure to verify the manufacturing date rather than the first registration date when selecting a vehicle.

Mandatory Inspection for Imported Vehicles

All used vehicles imported into Fiji must pass an inspection to ensure they are free from pests and diseases that could harm the environment. This inspection is crucial for maintaining the country’s biodiversity. Only vehicles cleared of pests are permitted for import.

Clearance Procedures

Once your vehicle reaches Suva Port, you will need to complete the customs clearance process. Most importers use customs brokers for assistance, but if you choose to do it yourself, schedule an appointment with the local customs office to expedite the process.

Be sure to prepare these documents:

  • Export Certificate (Japanese original and English version).
  • Bill of Lading (BoL).
  • De-registration Certificate.
  • Invoice showing the purchase price, export costs, freight costs, and insurance.

Taxes and Fees for Importing Cars into Fiji

When importing used cars to Fiji, be prepared for the following taxes and fees:

  • Duty rate: 32% of the invoice value.
  • Excise Duty: 15%.
  • VAT: 15%.
  • Vehicles with engine capacity exceeding 2500 cc: FJD $7,500 in taxes.
  • Vehicles with engine capacity exceeding 3000 cc: FJD $20,000 in taxes.

Additionally, there is a FJD $7 fee for each trip with an unregistered vehicle to your residence or the Land Transport Authority (LTA) office.

Please note: No duty concessions are available for used vehicles unless imported by diplomats or other entitled personnel.
